Thailand’s Remarkable Emission Reductions
Since 2019, Thailand has successfully reduced over 3.8 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) by substituting clinker in cement production. This achievement surpasses the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets ahead of schedule, bolstering its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 through innovative public-private collaboration.
Acknowledgment of Collaborative Efforts
This milestone was celebrated at the “TCMA at 20: The Next Chapter to Net Zero” event, where Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa recognized 34 partners for their roles in promoting low-carbon hydraulic cement, supported by six ministries. Their collective efforts have played a crucial role in advancing sustainable practices in the cement industry.
Impact on the Cement Industry
The Thai Cement Manufacturers Association (TCMA) reports significant reductions in emissions, with over 300,000 tonnes cut in 2021 and an additional million in 2022-2023. Clinker substitution has made hydraulic cement the dominant choice in construction, aligning with Thai Industrial Standard TIS 2594. TCMA Chairman Surachai Nimla-or emphasized that public-private cooperation is vital for effective climate action and industrial decarbonization.
