Holiday shoppers are buying expensive video game consoles amid significant industry shifts due to U.S. tariffs. Production has moved from China to Vietnam, causing price changes and impacting consumer behavior.

Holiday Shoppers and Market Shifts

Millions of American holiday shoppers are buying expensive video game consoles while a major shift in the industry goes largely unnoticed. This seismic change might be affecting market trends, availability, and consumer behavior during this bustling shopping season, indicating significant disruptions within the gaming ecosystem.

Manufacturing Changes Due to Tariffs

The production origins of gaming consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch have changed significantly because of recent U.S. tariffs. Previously, China supplied around 90% of U.S. imports, but that figure has plummeted to less than 5%. Instead, Vietnam has emerged as the primary manufacturing source, now responsible for over 75% of imports. This transition has led to Vietnamese exports skyrocketing from under $30 million to over $400 million monthly, marking a permanent shift away from China.

Price Implications and Future Outlook

Despite these supply chain changes, U.S. consumers have not seen major disruptions in stores. However, older console models have experienced price increases due to tariffs. Analysts suggest that even if tariffs are lifted, the migration to Vietnam for manufacturing is likely to continue, signaling a lasting reorientation of the global gaming console supply chain, which will ultimately affect consumer prices and competitiveness in the market.
