Experts maintain that the ongoing political crisis in the Solomon Islands will not jeopardize its strong ties with China, despite notable defections from Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele’s coalition. His pro-China policies continue to elicit concerns over security and domestic power struggles among lawmakers. Even after 19 members of parliament switched allegiance to form a new opposition coalition, Manele remains steadfastly in power.
The roots of this crisis trace back to March, when these politicians joined forces against Manele’s administration, which is part of the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT). The opposition coalition swiftly sought a no-confidence motion, demanding that Manele summon parliament votes. However, he has resisted these calls, maintaining his position.
Observers note that Manele’s governance reflects a consistent pro-China approach, reminiscent of his predecessor, Manasseh Sogavare.
