The United Nations faces a significant crisis as the United States withdraws funding from essential agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and potentially the World Trade Organization (WTO). This withdrawal comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions and urgent climate challenges, posing a threat to the global rules-based order.
The upcoming 14th Ministerial Conference of the WTO, set to take place in Cameroon, is being dubbed a “reform ministerial.” This three-and-a-half-day meeting is unlike any since the WTO’s inception in 1995. Whether these reforms will enable the organization to survive in its current form remains uncertain, raising further questions about its future.
Compounding these challenges is the broader context of war, climate change, and geopolitical polarization, as well as coercive trade measures and fractured supply chains. Despite these pressing issues, discussions at the conference are unlikely to address them effectively, leaving the urgency of these global challenges unrecognized.
